The public is welcome to attend MCEDC's Commissioner Meetings. This is a great opportunity to meet Economic Development staff and learn more about the mission and services that MCEDC provides.

Rock Quarry: Supervisors pass
Sierra Star

The open-pit rock quarry proposed on 121 acres near the intersection of Daulton Road (406) and Road 209 was given the green light by the Madera County Board of Supervisors. Developer Jack Baker, owner of Jackson Enterprises of Redding, said it was his fifth appearance before the board since 2003 and that he has spent a lot of time and money to assure the project is done correctly. Baker has estimated the quarry operation will use 55 acre feet, or 18 million gallons of water a year. Madera Quarry, Inc. plans to process and transport a maximum of 900,000 tons of aggregate material annually for up to 50 years. Read more

Historic North Fork Mill site gets new life
Sierra Star North Fork Historic Mill

The 67-year old Historic North Fork Mill site won't remain silent any longer as Coarsegold resident Erick Robertson has opened Alpine Sierra Greencycling, a wood-biomass processing and recycling operation that never burns its resources. Greencycling will produce co-generation fuel chips, decorative landscape materials, composts and mulches, wood stove pellets, sawdust, firewood, milled lumber and furniture production. Read more

New county chief appointed
Madera Tribune

Eric FlemmingEric Flemming has been appointed acting chief administrative officer of Madera County. Flemming was hired by former CAO Stell Manfredi in August of 2005. He was one of three assistant administrators in Manfredi's office. The others were Stan Kohler, who resigned about the time Manfredi retired, and John Sears, who has said he plans to retire later this year. Read more

May jobless rate falls slightly

Unemployment fell slightly in California in May, but the agricultural harvest and fruit-packing season drove more substantial declines across the central San Joaquin Valley. "This is normally the dip we're going to see, because that's the way the seasonal hiring patterns work," said Steven Gutierrez, a labor market analyst for the state. "From now to about October, we'll see farming be the lead, and we'll see increases in manufacturing as weill because of the food packing and manufacturing here." Read more

Pacific Ethanol plants emerge from bankruptcy

  • Court OKs reorganization plan
  • $290 Million wiped from the balance sheet

Pacific Ethanol Inc. of Sacramento says it's managed to erase $290 million in debt thanks to court approval of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization plan for its subsidiaries that actually make ethanol, when in operation. The plan, which was unanimously approved by the secured lenders, is expected to be effective by the end of June, the company says. Read more
