MCEDC Commissionner Meeting -
January 9, 2008
Madera County Economic Development Commission (MCEDC) will hold their quarterly Commissioners Meeting on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at the Madera County EDC office located at 2425 W. Cleveland Ave. The public is welcome to attend MCEDC's Commissioner Meetings. This is a great opportunity to meet Economic Development staff and learn more about the mission and services that MCEDC provides.
Note: MCEDC requests that presentations are no longer than 3-5 minutes.

Madera County Unemployment Rate
The unemployment rate in Madera County was 7.7 percent in November 2007, up from 6.8 percent in October 2007, and above the year-ago estimate of 6.6 percent. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 5.6 percent for California and 4.5 percent for the nation during the same period. Click here

The nonresidential property market had, until recently, resisted the bug that hit housing. But things are changing quickly.

The weakening economy and turmoil in the credit markets are combining to create stormy weather in 2008. The issuance of bonds backed by commercial assets such as office buildings and shopping centers is plunging, from around $200 billion this year to about $110 billion next year.

Sealed Air completes acquisition of Dow Chemical’s Ethafoam Business
Sealedair.com
Sealed Air Corporation announced today that it has completed the acquisition of certain assets relating to the Dow Chemical Company’s Ethafoam and related polyethylene foam product lines, further accelerating sales and expanding its global presence in specialty materials. According to Sealed Air the acquisition will have no impact on the Madera Manufacturing Plant.

Reality sets in for ethanol as prices fall, investors sell
Fresno Bee
Pacific Ethanol Inc. announced that a difficult market for ethanol producers had forced it to halt construction of a plant in California’s Imperial Valley. Shares of the Sacramento-based owner of ethanol plants in Madera County and in Oregon have dropped from a mid-2006 high of $44.50 to less than $5 last month. Read more….

Madera’s Evapco West plans to expand its operations and jobs
Division of Maryland company will add production offices, truck loading docks, and manufacturing equipment.

A Madera manufacturer of industrial cooling towers is expanding its operation and adding 30 to 40 jobs over the next two to three years. Evapco West is adding a 49,000 square foot manufacturing building and about 160,000 square feet of concrete and asphalt storage and parking areas.
