Tesoro Viejo Inc. will be the Corporate Sponsor for MCEDC’s State of the County Luncheon
The Corporate Sponsor for the Madera County EDC’s State of the County luncheon will be Tesoro Viejo, Inc., developer of a master planned community that will be located in the heart of the Rio Mesa growth area, east of Highway 41 and south of Avenue 15.
This new community, which is being developed by an entity formed by McCaffrey Homes, Gary McDonald and Lyles United, LLC, will include new homes, schools, offices, stores and other businesses that will create 7,000 new jobs.
Additionally, a full 25 percent of the project area will be dedicated to neighborhood parks, recreational areas, public trails and open space. |

Economy drives up Yosemite tourism
The Fresno Bee
The economic crash that devastated both Wall Street and Main Street last year might have been a boon to America’s national parks and Yosemite National Park as a case in point. The park had its highest turnout since the mid-1990’s with nearly 4 million visitors, reversing years of tourism losses. It supports the theory that people are driving to nature rather than flying to Europe or Hawaii, says one National Park Service expert. Read more

Applications continue to surge at UC Merced
The Merced Sun Star
More than 12,000 students applied to UC Merced last year for fall 2010, a record for the five-year-old university. A majority of the applicants, 10,594, were incoming freshmen, and 1,722 were transfer students. This year’s pool was 21 percent larger than last year’s numbers. Read more

California awarded $2.25b for high-speed rail

Federal officials announced that California will get a big share of the $8 billion fund for projects nationwide. California will get $2.25 billion to help build a high-speed rail system connecting Southern California to the Bay Area through the San Joaquin Valley, as well as additional funds for other rail projects. Other states getting high-speed rail funding include Washington, North Carolina and Florida. Read more

Valley’s new-home builders expect recovery soon

The new-home market is skidding along the bottom but is poised for recovery after a tough 2009 that featured a stubborn recession, increasing unemployment and competition from low-priced foreclosures, home builders say. But builders, noting that this down real estate cycle has lasted longer than the typical slump are preparing for an uptick. Some are buying land and subdivided lots to replace a dwindling inventory. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced $150 million in green jobs training grants, as authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 The “Pathways Out of Poverty” grants will support programs that help disadvantaged populations find ways out of poverty and into economic self-sufficiency through employment in energy efficiency and renewable energy industries.
