MCEDC Commissioner Meeting
April 9, 2008 3:00pm in Oakhurst

Madera County Economic Development Commission (MCEDC) will hold their quarterly Commissioners Meeting on April 9, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at the office of Yosemite Gateway Association of Realtors in Oakhurst. The public is welcome to attend MCEDC's Commissioner Meetings. This is a great opportunity to meet Economic Development staff and learn more about the mission and services that MCEDC provides. Note: MCEDC requests that presentations are no longer than 3-5 minutes.

Madera General Plan Update

Over the next two years, the City of Madera will be holding a series of public meetings to help update the city’s general plan. The process of adopting or amending the general plan requires public participation. The next general plan meeting will be addressing the topic of Circulation on April 28th.

Madera County Unemployment Rate

The unemployment rate in Madera County was 9.7 percent in February 2008, up from a revised 9.3 percent in January 2008, and above the year-ago estimate of 8.5 percent. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 6.1 percent for California and 5.2 percent for the nation during the same period. For more detailed information Click here

New Manufacture for Madera County
MCEDC Press Release

Rain Creek Baking Company will be relocating to Madera County and occupying a 165,000 square foot building located on W. Almond Ave that formerly housed Regency Thermographers. The Chicago based company is a division of Kronos Products, Inc. they specialize in making philo dough and specialized foods such as baklava. The company is expected to employ 60 full-time workers and 300 seasonal workers. The company would like to be in operation as early as June 1st. Click here for full press release.

No consensus on Madera casino off Rancheria land

MapOn March 12, 2008, an estimated 800 people packed Hatfield hall at the Madera Fairgrounds for a public hearing on an environmental report for the proposed $250 million casino project. The project is expected to create 1,461 full-time casino jobs and 2,319 Madera-area jobs. Read More...

EPA says Central Valley air is cleaner

The San Joaquin Valley has attained the “PM-10” air quality standard relating to coarse particle pollution, the US Environmental Protection Agency says. Air monitors throughout the eight-county San Joaquin portion of the Central Valley reported no regulatory violations of the PM-10 standard from 2003 through the end of 2006, the EPA says. Near recession for U.S. contraction for California predicted

• State’s economy dragged down by housing mess
• California is bearing the brunt of the weakening U.S. economy

The national economy is narrowly avoiding recession and the California economy is wavering under the weight of the housing correction, according to the first quarter California forecast from the Business Forecasting Center in the Eberhardt School of Business at University of the Pacific in Stockton. The economy remains in a susceptible condition in the first quarter of 2008 as the risk of a housing-induced recession is coupled with record high commodity prices that are fueling inflation and souring sentiment, the report says.
